On a daily basis, I log into LinkedIn to get my daily dose
of what is going on in the world of Instructional Design. There are about 5 key
players in my network that post a few times a week. I work on a small team so LinkedIn
is my extended network, a window into what other instructional designers are
doing, who may work on larger teams. This week I happened upon #IDIODC, which
is the first time that I have seen this tag. But, what’s interesting is that
the tag is also the name of a podcast. It’s sort of interesting, right? Well, even
though it looks like it is attention-seeking, it still caught my attention. Or rather,
the person who posted the podcast, Carla Torgerson, is someone that I admire in
the eLearning community and so I was compelled to learn more.
#IDIODC actually stands for “Instructional Designers In Offices
Drinking Coffee”. The podcast is
recorded by the company dominKnow (https://www.dominknow.com/idiodc)
and their model appears to be to interview instructional design experts to draw
people to their website. and then perhaps explore their products and services. If I were to think about the knowledge sharing
activities that we learned this week, I would say that this company is doing 2
knowledge sharing activities with their podcast to appeal to the instructional design community—collecting and sharing. First, the company “collects”
interview content because they list all of the previous podcast recordings. They are not “curating” just yet because the recordings aren’t segmented or ordered by
any topic. And, then the experts “share” their podcast via social media, which
is how I happened to find the content this week.
So, this week, Carla Torgerson “shared” a micro video recap
of her conversation. To frame up the post, she wrote the following statement
and then included a video that was shorter than 2 minutes:
“Last week I was a guest on #IDIODC, talking about Microlearning with Brent Schlenker and Chris Van Wingerden. Here’s a micro recap of our conversation!
#microlearning #elearning #learningdesign #learninganddevelopment
Experts are constantly trying to stand out in the social media
space and video is a great way to do this. I’m always drawn to videos and since
it was less than 2 minutes, she had my attention. Carla wasn’t that descriptive in
her framing of the podcast, but since I
am a fan of hers already and I consider her to be an expert in the field, I
clicked on the link. Since I have listened to some of her talks before, I
decided to bookmark the link to watch it later and share with the class (see the link below). While Carla used some
general learning tags, I felt that she could have also included some quotes
from her talk, as well. This approach would have been appealing to those who may not be familiar with her work. But, all in all, I love LinkedIn for this very reason. I always find at least one new topic, technique or resource each week.
